The Work

The art market has a price for everything. BAI UEIT applies these prices honestly — which is the first obscenity. One hundred contemporary artists valued by weight: per gram, per kilogram, per tonne. A live feed, updating without pause, without comment, without visible irony. The irony is structurally embedded. The system has already done this work. The numbers shift as on a trading floor, as on a gold exchange. The departure board of art history — all destinations equivalent, all flights perpetually delayed.

The Display

A large electronic board. The visual language is instantly legible: commodity markets, metal exchanges. Artist names, unit prices, weight categories — continuously updated. Some artists priced by the gram like precious metals. Some by the kilogram. Some by the tonne. The unit of measurement is not incidental. It is the entire statement. Every artist on the list submitted to the same question — the only question the market actually poses: how much of you, by weight, can I purchase? The obscenity is not in the content. It is in the accuracy.

The Original Situation: Dubai Gold 24, Rome

First realised within a functioning gold shop. The salesman remained. The gold remained in its cases. Only the price boards changed — not in kind, only in content. Where gold prices scrolled, artist names scroll now. The infrastructure is identical. The merchandise has been substituted. This substitution is the argument. Dubai Gold 24 became an art fair for two days: the most tradable art, officially and illegally on offer. Red lighting, mini projections, sound. Five to eight visitors at a time. The art fair scaled to its actual human conditions: the private view, the tight room, the transaction that precedes the artwork.

The Replicable Preview Lounge

Through cinematic documentation of the Dubai Gold 24 installation, BAI UEIT generates a distributed autonomous form. The filmed installation becomes the work. No shipping. No customs. No climate control. No insurance. The display runs. The work travels by the same logic it critiques.
